Juxtaposed against the backdrop ofTableMountainand ourTwoOceansis a sprawling reality of our townships, which are a crucible of the world’s most pressing problems. Emerging out of these harsh circumstances are the inspiring examples of hope. TheCape Care Routeshowcases some of the projects where people are caring for the environment and for each other. Initiated for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, this Trail of Two Cities celebrates the partnerships that bring prosperity to both planet and people.

So if you’re the type of visitor who wants to experience the soul and character of a destination, and want to meet the local communities and understand their challenges and aspirations for the future, then this tour is for you.

Golden Flowers in Khayelitsha
A one-man success story, where he makes beautiful flowers from empty tin cans and is now fully self-dependant.

Abalimi Bezekhaya (Gardeners of the Home) in Kahyelitsha
Teaching people to grow their own food and supply locals with trees and shrubs to green their areas, A peace park that unites the people of Khayelitsha.

 

Catholic Welfare and Development – Masipuhlisani Center in Khayelitsha

A facility on the grounds of the Catholic Church, that provides office space for numerous social service organisations that work in communities.

Philani Weavers in Khayelitsha.

An Arts and Craft Center primarily engaged in teaching and producing Woven and Screen-printed products, which are sold in the craft-shop for the benefit of the crafter-moms themselves.

The on-site crèche and pre-school takes care of the kids while the mothers are engaged in the work-shops.

Guga S’Tebe Arts and Community Center- Langa Township
Skills development and job-creation in action. There is a Picture-frame Workshop  and a Pottery Workshop that provides training and job-placement opportunities to local people. Products are available for sale to visitors.

The day ends with a walking tour of the area with a local guide- “meet the people, feel the warmth”
