Discover how the squalor and the deprivation of the townships of a previously disadvantaged community is being transformed and provided with modern schools, clinics, electricity, clean water, liveable homes and sport facilities.
Their struggle against apartheid and their endeavours during these difficult years to uplift themselves through the establishment of community centres and informal trading initiatives like “spaza” shops and “Shebeens”.
Get an idea of what is being done about HIV and Aids through aids clinics, youth centres and counselling programs.
After picking you up in our vehicle, the guide will provide on-board commentary and information regarding the City, and the Townships. Eg Who created the Townships, and for whom? When were they created, and why?
And by your visit to and interaction in the Township, you will learn of how the Townships are being transformed with the energy of local people.
We visit Langa Township exclusively- the oldest and most historic in Cape Town.
The Guga S’Tebe Arts and Community Center.
Be witness to the programmes of Skills Development, Job-creation and the facilitation of small businesses.
You will have the opportunity of purchasing Art and Craft here- where it is made by locals! This is entirely up to you- there is no pressure- we merely provide the time if required. You are then introduced to your local guide who will take you on a walking tour of the area and it’s inhabitants- lasting about 40 minutes.
The Route will include………………..
En-route-LangaMuseum (old migrant worker’s registration office), Tavern (shebeen), a pre-school and a township restaurant where lunch is an option
The infamous “singles quarters” and the hostels, – a product of the Migrant Workers Laws of the previous regime which destroyed families and created a dysfunctional society.
The “new flats” which are the old hostels now converted into smart new family apartments. A chance for decent family living.
Settlers- “The Beverly Hills” of Langa, built for former civil servants as a smoke- replacing the shacks in the informal settlement.
Joe Slovo- An informal settlement, derogatorily called a “squatter camp” – residents awaiting a new home.
Langa Taxi Rank – sequel to the Sharpville Massacres of 21 March 1960, as a result screen to foreign visitors.
The N2 Gateway Human Settlements Project.- Brand new homes and apartments of the defiance campaign over the pass laws, led by P.A.C. leader Robert Sobukwe and local resistance leader, Phillip Kgosana
